This catalogue commemorates the first time selected artworks from the estate of James McNeill Whistler toured the U.S. These works, along with some of Whistler’s personal effects, were donated to the Hunterian Art Gallery by Rosalind Birnie Philip, youngest sister of Whistler’s wife Beatrix. The objects provide an intimate portrait of the life and times of this famed American expatriate. The Hunterian has by far the most extensive collection of Whistler’s art, ranging from paintings, watercolors, and prints to sketch designs for costumes, interiors, and graphic images. Included in this exhibition of 129 works are a dozen paintings and 57 prints, as well as personal belongings such as silverware, porcelain, manuscripts and books. This sampling of Whistler’s artworks and effects spans nearly 40 years of his life, highlighting the locations, personalities, and aesthetic breakthroughs that both influenced his artistic vision and immortalized Whistler the man as an iconoclastic American artist.
The national tour of James McNeill Whistler: Selected Works from the Hunterian Art Gallery was organized by International Arts & Artists.
