A fully illustrated catalogue of Kara Walker’s works as the official US representative at the 25th Sao Paulo Bienal in 2002, featuring her extraordinary—and controversial—black paper tableaux on themes of slavery and antebellum plantation life. (The San Paulo Bienal is the largest international contemporary art event in the Western Hemisphere.) The exhibition was organized by IA&A and curated by Dr. Robert Hobbs; Hobbs’ essay on the artist is included. The centerpiece of Walker’s installation was a cyclorama 85 feet in circumference, built on-site and filled with near-life-sized, cut-paper silhouettes. The catalogue includes a double fold-out of this work.
