Tools As Art: The Hechinger Collection

Tools as Art showcases more than 200 works that instantiate or use tools and hardware from the Hechinger Collection. Artists such as Jim Dine, Arman, Jean Tinguely, Lucas Samaras, Richard Estes, Claes Oldenburg, and Walker Evans, employ their imaginative power to construct witty sculptures of tools. Pete Hamill contributes in a delightful essay that shares his insights on the creative process and meaning of tools in our lives. The quality of the work that is displayed invokes a strong sense of connection to the household objects that are not typically found in modern art.

Intent to Deceive – Fakes and Forgeries in the Art World

Art fraud is one of the most serious challenges facing museums today in their stewardship of our cultural heritage. It is, therefore, critical to go “behind the scenes” and examine how these daring forgers used artful methodology to fool—at least initially—the experts, art dealers, and institutions who validated and collected their work. Han van Meegeren, Elmyr de Hory, Eric Hebborn, John Myatt and Mark Landis were all unable to make a career based on acceptance of their own artistic style. They found fakery, the exact duplication of an original work of art, and forgery, the creation and selling of a work of art which is falsely credited to another, to be their most accessible avenue to recognition and commercial success.

IA&A Design Studio created an interactive, online catalogue for the exhibition. Given the ongoing nature of forgery, an evolving online catalogue best illustrates the continuing deceit and beguilement entangled within the art world

Art in Context

At IA&A, we’ve been watching international partnerships grow and develop for over two decades. We’ve seen that many arts institutions want to engage with partners abroad, but often lack effective channels for discussion and discovery of best practices.

Now, IA&A is pleased to announce the release of a report that explores partnerships between American arts institutions and their counterparts abroad. Art in Context: The Current State of International Cultural Engagement shares the results of research conducted to better understand international work and identifies strategies to enhance the breadth and strength of this engagement.

Thoughtfully designed by IA&A’s Design Studio, the report illustrates the impact international engagement can have in promoting cross-cultural understanding and supporting the arts on a global scale.
